Melt(s)

So stay with me on this one. It will come together. I promise.

Yogurt Melts. If you have had young children (or been around them) the past few years, you probably know what I'm talking about. Heaven sent. They are little drops of yogurt that have been freeze-dried and are perfect for older babies. Non-messy and so delicious. I wish that I had given Jackson a whole bag of these (he normally gets just a few since a bag is normally $3 and only has four servings in it) for his birthday instead of a cake he didn't enjoy. There isn't a problem that yogurt melts can't solve in our house. At least for those under the age of two.

Sleeping has been rough in our house the past few days. At least for Jackson and me. Lucky Jonathan, he can sleep through crying babies. Jackson has been waking up in the middle of the night and even though it is somewhat simple to get him back to sleep by giving him a paci, I am another story. I don't know what my deal is but the past several nights, it has taken me an hour to fall back asleep after getting up for Jackson. Can you believe it? Me! Having a hard time falling asleep. Jackson has also been on a nap strike. The ultimate example was on Friday when he had been awake for at least an hour in the middle of the night, had a nap and woke up at 10:30. He did not take another nap the rest of the day. Which means neither did I, despite also being up in the middle of the night.

So on Saturday morning, I was sitting on the couch, willing my eyes to stay open. Despite our lack of sleep, Jackson woke up at 6am. One of the first things he did when Jonathan set him down was go through the open diaper bag. And he found a bag of empty yogurt melts. He grabbed it in his hand and crawled over to me to open it and give him some. That's the first time he's done something like that and the most adorable thing he had done in at least two days. Despite my lack of sleep and the impending doom of the day (Jonathan was gone ALL day long with the youth from our church on a temple trip to DC), I couldn't help but "melt" at our little boy who was causing me so much sleep deprivation. It gave me enough of a kick to get up and find a new bag of yogurt melts and fork over a few. He is irresisitible.

P.S. Naps on Saturday? None for me! As soon as I went into my bedroom to lay down (during what is normally one of three naps), Jackson woke up. After only half an hour. He normally sleeps for at least an hour. Turkey. Second nap of the day-repeat. He did take a longer nap but I had a few things to do before I put myself down. The mama conundrum: do you stay awake while your child is down for a nap and actually accomplish something or put yourself down for a much-needed nap? Third nap-no way jose! Even after driving around for an hour (literally). Did he wake up again last night? Yes. And I poked Jonathan and told him that Jackson was awake and needed him. (This had been previously discussed). And then, to my delight, Jonathan got up with Jackson and I slept in until 7:30. Woo-hoo!

I love this post! I hear you on this one. When I was pregnant with Andrew, it would take an hour or so for me to get back to sleep after one of Olivia's wake ups. As far as naps, I almost always slept when Olivia slept. There were hard times when her naps became inconsistent and she started dropping them, but eventually I adjusted to getting fewer naps myself.

In the beginning of Andrew's days, he slept so much that their afternoon naps overlapped enough and I would still get some day sleep at least 3 or 4 times a week. But the past month has been Mommy Nap Weaning Month. And it has been r-o-u-g-h. No more naps for me unless every star in the universe is aligned. I'm over it, but for the first two weeks, I was one cranky mama. I'm still totally wiped out everyday by about three o'clock, but somehow I get over the hump and make it through the day. Now I just need to learn to go to bed when they do at night. I confess that I enjoy the peace and quiet and Dustin's company so much that I just have to stay up, tired or not. Throw in a paci reboot at night for Olivia and one to two feedings a night for Andrew, who also wakes up at 6:45 AM, and I'm a sleep deprived zombie. See, I'm rambling about this on your blog- can you tell it's been an issue?! :-) Hang in there!

Oh, and we love the melts around here too!

You poor thing! One of my big concerns is actually not being able to sleep as well after having kids...considering it takes me approximately 0.3 seconds to fall asleep now. I mentioned offhandedly to Dan the other day that I fall asleep more quickly on my right side, at which point he laughed and proceeded with an elaborate demonstration of the right side taking 0.3 seconds and the left taking 0.4. Harumph.

You're making me want to go out and find some of those yogurt melts. Haven't heard of them.

Sleep and young children generally aren't combined in the same sentence. Why it's that way is beyond me, but God must have his reasons that it's this way. Maybe we can get him to explain sometime?
